2020 Scholarship Award Winner is Ryan Thein

Press Release – June 2020 – For the first time, the Crawford County Democratic Party has offered a scholarship worth $300 to one student in the Class of 2020. In order to be eligible for the scholarship the student must live in Crawford County and must illustrate commitment to the ideals of democracy by promoting peace, liberty, justice, equality, human rights, and the common good.

The winner of this years scholarship is Ryan M. Thein, son of Mark and Deanna Thein, Prairie du Chien. Ryan considers himself to be a “political junkie” who memorizes the names of U.S. governors, representatives, senators and their platforms, loves to study history and is knowledgeable about current events. He has served on the Student Council for four years and currently serves as Student Council President. He is a member of the Political Science club, serves as a mentor for young children in the PALS and Sources of Strength programs. He also participated in soccer, baseball and basketball. His political activities have included helping his mother canvass for a candidate and accompanying his father to union meetings and protests regarding the collective bargaining law. He is a first time voter this year and plans to be a regular voter in the future. He was recently selected to participate in the Wisconsin State Senate Scholar program and was a finalist for the U.S. Senate Youth Program.

Ryan has been accepted to attend UW-Madison as a political science/pre-law major with plans to continue his studies in law school. He hopes to someday run for political office and serve our state as a U.S. Representative or Senator. His favorite political tagline this season comes from Elizabeth Warren and says it all: “Fight hard, dream big”.
